Notes, gaps and open questions
Life & family
- The Rebbe's birth year is disputed: Encyclopaedia Judaica gives 1888, and the reason is unexplained. The 17 Teves birth date rests on encyclopedic accounts only, with no archival record. His age at death is also given differently.
- Several family dates are unresolved: the birth years of the Yismach Moshe, R' Chaim Tzvi, R' Yekusiel Yehuda (II) and R' Moshe. The Yetev Lev's death date is also uncertain, because one source's תרמ"ו conflicts with all others.
- The publication date of the sefer *Kedushas Yom Tov* (1895 vs. 1905) is unresolved. The titles and contents of the 1883–87 dispute pamphlets are unknown.
- How the Rebbe's parents were related (cousin, aunt's daughter or uncle's daughter) is unresolved. Data on his sisters is unsourced.
- No teacher, melamed, chavrusa or yeshiva of his youth is named. Seven of his eight semicha-givers are unnamed, and the semichos are undated. His bar mitzvah date is unknown.
- For his daughters, birth dates are missing, the birth order conflicts between sources, burial details are unresolved and causes of death are unknown.
- The length of his kest is given as "over a year" in some sources and "counted years" in others. His connection to Belz during the kest rests on Yiddish Wikipedia only.
- Who arranged his second marriage, and why it took place in Tshebin, is not explained.
- His daily avodah (davening times, tish, kvitlach, learning schedule) is not described in any source available to us.
- The testimonies of contemporary tzaddikim, the R' Shach hesped and the "chadash asur" formula are known only from secondary citations. None was checked in the original.
Europe
- The start of the Rebbe's Satmar court is dated 1905 in some sources and 1928 in others. His installation as rav of Satmar is dated 1928 or 1934.
- Several dates conflict:
- the Krula appointment: תרפ"ד, 1925 or 1926;
- the return to Orshiva: 5681 or 1922;
- the Satmar compromise agreement: February or June 1930.
- The mikveh demolition story and the Krula succession feud are reported only by Hebrew Wikipedia.
- Background dates conflict:
- the transfer of the region to Romania: 1920 or 1921;
- Machzikei Hadas: 1871 or about 1878;
- the earlier Satmar split: 1897 or 1898.
- No Jewish population figures exist for Krula (Carei), and none for Máramaros after 1920.
1944
- The founding date of the Satmar ghetto (26 April, 3 May, or Nisan 5704) is unresolved. Also unknown:
- which transports carried Satmar Jews;
- the fate of the dayanim, the 334 yeshiva students and the Rebbe's household;
- the number of Satmar chassidim (as distinct from the city's Jews) who were murdered.
- No separate ghetto or deportation data exist for Krula or Orshiva. The date and place of death of R' Yekusiel Yehuda of Sighet are not given.
- USHMM and Yad Vashem figures were available to us only at the national level, not per ghetto. For Kolozsvár, the gap between 18,000 concentrated and 16,148 deported is unexplained.
- The Kasztner train's numbers and dates conflict between sources.
- No primary Satmar wartime documents were available. Claims about "Zionist conditions" on his escape and his refusal of the Oradea car rest on Hebrew Wikipedia only.
- The "from darkness to darkness" saying exists only in English, with no Yiddish original.
- The length of his stay in Eretz Yisroel after the war is given as 1945–46 in one source and two and a half years in another.
Rebuilding in America
- Sources give competing reasons for his move to America: debts, bankruptcy, or a fundraising trip. His arrival is dated 1946 or 1947.
- Founding years are missing for Torah VeYirah (earliest attestation 1969), the girls' schools, mikvaos, batei hora'ah, cemeteries, branches abroad and the Israeli institutions.
- Several institutional details conflict:
- CRC: 1953, 1954 or 1955.
- Bikur Cholim: early 1950s, 1956 or 1957, and who founded it.
- *Der Yid*: founded or bought, the year of takeover, and its editor.
- *Di Tzeitung*: 1986 or 1988.
- Figures for the community also conflict: a founding group of about 70 or 9, and in 1961 either 860 households or 400 families.
- Kiryas Joel's founding is dated 1970 or 1974, and its incorporation 1976 or 1977. No words of the Rebbe about Kiryas Joel are in our materials.
- No text of the Rebbe explicitly requiring Yiddish as the spoken or teaching language was found. No documented guidance from him on the boys' curriculum exists.
- His Edah HaChareidis office conflicts in both date (1951, 1952, 1953 or תשט"ז) and title (President or Gaavad). Sources also differ on whether he visited Israel two or four times.
- Accounts of R' Moshe Teitelbaum's Sighet shul conflict: Williamsburg until 1966, or Borough Park since the war.
The shittah
- Some well-known statements were not verified in Vayoel Moshe: the "even if the whole government were pious" quotation, his answer on R' Chaim Vital, and the Brisker Rav's "fifth Shulchan Aruch" remark.
- No siman available to us says explicitly "do not take state money." Accounts of Edah practice on Bituach Leumi conflict.
- His views on voting in local Israeli elections, and in US elections, are not in our materials.
- Kanaus, daas Torah, and the role of the rav versus the rebbe are not treated systematically in any source available to us.
- The founding year of Neturei Karta is given as 1935, 1936, 1937 or 1938.
Vayoel Moshe
- The year of first publication is given as 1958, 1959, 1960 or 1961. Sources disagree on whether the first edition held one maamar or two. Its place of printing is unknown. Page counts (453 vs. 510) refer to unspecified editions.
- The five printings, a secret printing, a US postal ban and book-burnings are reported only in Yiddish Wikipedia.
- No haskamos for the sefer, and no contemporary reviews, were available.
- Many Hebrew quotations come from garbled OCR and were repaired. Some siman numbers (e.g. קס"א, קס"ה, קס"ח, קס"ט) are reconstructions. All need checking against the printed sefer.
- Simanim צ"ז and קע"א break off in our text. Simanim קע"א–קפ"ה were only partly available. The "185 simanim" total is inferred.
- Some references differ between sources: Yoma פ"ד vs. 94b, Arachin 16b/17b, Sota 37a/b, Vayikra 19:7/19:17. It is unresolved whether the "asmachta" remark is attributed to the Mirkeves HaMishneh or to Rabbeinu Yonah.
- For Maamar Yishuv Eretz Yisroel and Maamar Lashon HaKodesh, no Hebrew original was available. Many chapters were available only in partial English translation. The identifications of the people and institutions he targets are the translator's own.
- Hirschprung's exact title (principal or "chief rabbi") is unresolved.
The Three Oaths
- On the Avnei Nezer, Hebrew Wikipedia says the Rebbe "accepted" him, while the sefer's text shows him disputing it. The siman numbers (453, 454 or 456) are unresolved.
- No reply by the Rebbe by name was found to R' Meir Simcha, Megillas Esther, R' Zevin, R' Herzog, the Gra's or the Hafla'ah's readings, the R' Zeira retraction midrash, or Balfour and San Remo.
- Some claims and figures are the Rebbe's own and were not independently verified: the UN "trusteeship" claim, "over 90% heretics" in the Knesset, and 50,000 impoverished Egyptian Jews.
- The original texts of R' Chaim Vital, the Avnei Nezer, the Maharal and Iggeres Teiman were not available to us, only quotations of them.
- Almost no scholarly or Satmar-tradition commentary on specific simanim was available.
Al HaGeulah ve'al HaTemurah
- The Hakdama's date (Tuesday of Pinchas or 3 Sivan 5727) is unresolved, and the colophon chronogram is illegible. So the order of writing relative to the 1967 war is not established.
- Authorship is disputed. The body is attributed to "a talmid" or to R' N. Y. Meisels, and the Hakdama to the Rebbe or to his disciples.
- Editions conflict: 5758, 2003 and 5766, with the editor named as either R' Yosef or R' Ephraim Yosef Dov Ashkenazi. The total number of simanim is unknown.
- The death-toll wording differs between versions: "hundreds of thousands" vs. "many thousands."
- Several people and events are unnamed or undated:
- the Eretz Yisroel court and the refugee ship;
- the author of the Knesset letter;
- the year of the Meron collapse.
- The Goga episode rests only on the Rebbe and one scholar.
Other writings
- The full Shu"t Divrei Yoel and Divrei Yoel on the Torah and Mo'adim were not available. Only responsum 132 (on R' Kook) is known, and only by its reference.
- Volume counts conflict (2 volumes, 8+8 volumes, or "nine volumes"). Publication dates and editors are missing.
- The identity and contents of the letter collections are unclear: *Divrei Yoel – Michtavim*, *Kisvei Yoel* and *Igros Maharit*.
Other authorities & controversies
- Our materials contain nothing on the Rebbe's relations with R' Aharon Kotler, the Chazon Ish, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Klausenburg, Pupa or Bobov regarding Zionism. The Brisker Rav's reasoning is also unknown.
- No source documents a direct personal exchange between the Rebbe and another named gadol.
- Some dates for other authorities conflict:
- the Munkatcher: born 1868 or 1871, died 1936 or 1937;
- the Belzer Rebbe: born 1877 or 1880;
- Rabbi M. M. Kasher's book: 1968 or 1969;
- R' Shlomo Aviner's book: title and year.
- The claim linking Zionism to the Holocaust is presented as the Rebbe's theological view only. Critics' quotation of it lacks a page reference.
- No dated Satmar–Agudah confrontations from the 1950s–70s are documented.
After 1979
- His actual level of functioning between his 1968 stroke and 1979 is unresolved. Accounts of the regency during those years are encyclopedic only.
- The 1996 and 2002 wills are not available. There is no independent finding on claims of dementia.
- The court reasoning and the details of the 2006 lawsuits are missing, as is how the institutions were divided between the two courts.
- R' Aaron's appointment in Kiryas Joel is dated 1983, 1984 or 1985. R' Moshe's birth date is given as 1 or 17 November 1914.
- Material on R' Zalman Leib is thinner than on R' Aaron.
Satmar today
- No reliable current estimate of Satmar's size exists. Figures range from 50,000 to nearly 300,000. No sizes are given for the two factions.
- There is no data on size or institutions for Satmar communities outside New York.
- No figures exist for Satmar tzedakah or for institutional budgets.
- No source sets out each court's position on the shittah.
- Several current matters are unknown: observance of the Kotel ban today, the outcome of 2025 education legislation, and recent communal events.
